Dermal Fillers

Lip fillers and Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in our skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds on to water giving volume to the skin.

As we age our own natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. Treatment with dermal filler uses a manufactured hyaluronic acid which the skin does not recognize as a foreign body, to volumise deep lines or areas of volume loss such as cheeks. The hyaluronic acid that we use has been extensively tested, FDA approved, involves no animals in its production and therefore carries a minimal risk of allergic reaction. Over time lip fillers and dermal fillers are gradually broken down by the body and excreted along with our own hyaluronic acid. The treated areas gradually return to their pre-treatment state with results usually lasting 6-12 months. Our Bournemouth team specialise in lip fillers and will be happy to advise you on the recommended procedure.

  • Peri-oral lines (smokers lines)
  • Glabellar lines (frown lines)

What does the dermal filler treatment involve?

After your initial consultation the areas to be treated are numbed with a local anaesthetic cream which takes approximately 30 minutes to work fully. Many of the fillers also contain anaesthetic to make the experience as comfortable as possible. The dermal fillers are then injected slowly and the area being corrected massaged to ensure even distribution.

There may be a feeling of pressure as the product is injected which is only transient. Bruising can occur which may be treated with Arnica cream available from many chemists and supermarkets. The injected areas, in particular lips, are likely to be swollen for a few hours. Lips may take a couple of days to settle however this can be relieved with the use of ice packs. Results are immediate and generally last from 6-12 months.

Can I see the results straight away?

Yes, the results are instantly visible. The results last approximately 6-12 months, but depend on factors such as age, lifestyle and type and volume of filler injected.

Are there any side effects?

Yes, there are possible side effects of treatment with fillers, although they are rare. Occasionally people can experience injection site reactions, including redness, swelling, bruising, itching, discolouration, infection, pain and lumps/bumps. These effects are all temporary and should disappear within a week.

How do I know how much filler I will need?

During the initial consultation you will be advised on an estimated number of syringes required based on desired outcome of treatment. It is entirely up to you whether you have more or less filler.
