Laser Tattoo Removal Procedure, Benefits, and Risks

The demand for laser tattoo removal has gone through the roof in recent years with many people now regretting their spontaneous, under the influence whilst on holiday, (or in my case, bored and at a loose end one day), non-researched tattoo decisions. Whilst it is fantastic that we now have the option of removing what we believed to be a thing of permanency, it is certainly not the easy option.

Here are some facts about laser tattoo removal that you may be interested to know:

It is painful?

This is the number one concern for most clients and there’s no point sugar-coating it, it hurts! On the plus side, laser is very quick so most can grit their teeth and bear it! I’ve been removing my own and my pain tolerance is pretty rubbish so if I can do it, most people can.\

It requires multiple sessions.

The way the laser works is by targeting the ink molecules and shattering them into smaller pieces so that your body’s lymphatic system is able to drain them away. This process can take a number of weeks and not all of the ink can be targeted in one go. You’ll notice the tattoo continues to fade over the 6 week gap required in between sessions.

How many sessions you’ll need is difficult to say.

Factors such as the type of ink, age of the tattoo, skin condition and depth of implantation will all have an influence on the rate of fading. On average most people require somewhere in the region on 6-9 sessions. Perhaps surprisingly, in many cases the older tattoos are easier to remove than the modern ones because of the poor quality of ink!

Is scarring possible?

Now, this is more down to the fact that blistering of the skin can occur post treatment and if burst or not looked after then an infection could occur and lead to scarring. If you follow the aftercare instructions provided then this will minimise the risks. That said, the laser works at extremely high temperatures so it is absolutely possible that in the wrong, uneducated hands, burns and scarring could and have been known to occur. The answer is – DO YOUR RESEARCH.

How can I find a qualified laser technician?

Any qualified laser technician should be more than happy to show you their training and insurance certificates. Be aware that when going to large companies you may not be being treated by someone who’s had laser training and is individually insured. If they’re not insured and something happens, you have nowhere to turn for recompense.

Can the laser treatment get rid of my tattoo completely?

We can’t guarantee complete removal and no one should be. Many people want us to remove every last trace of their original tattoo and whilst this would be the ideal outcome, we cannot and will not guarantee this. Trauma to the skin has been caused by having the tattoo and then again by having it removed so to think the skin can return to exactly 100% the same as it was before any of this is unrealistic. Our laser is one of the best Q-switched on the market and removes every colour except greens, however black is the easiest to remove and has the best success rate. Most tattoos virtually disappear but in some cases a faint shadow of colour may still be visible. For most this is still preferable to what was there to begin with!

Is the laser treatment expensive?

If it’s really cheap, be concerned. High quality lasers cost tens of thousands of pounds. As with most things you get what you pay for and when it’s your skin, don’t take the risk! The average cost is approximately £35 for the first square inch and £10 per subsequent square inch with discounts usually available for block booking sessions.

So, in summary… if you find yourself in the position of needing a tattoo removed you need to consider that it won’t happen overnight- with 6 weeks in between sessions it’s a slow process, it will be uncomfortable albeit over quickly and it will probably cost you more than the tattoo did in the first place!  But if you really hate your tattoo regret, it’ll definitely be worth it!
