01 Jun What is the difference between Botox® and Dermal Fillers?
What is Botox®?
Let us first look at Botox® or to give it its’ proper name – Botulinum Toxin Type A. As the name suggests, it is a toxin, but a naturally occurring one that has been used safely within both private practice and the NHS for many years. Botulinum Toxin Type A is manufactured by different companies and as such you may hear it called different things, a common few are: Azzalure, Bocouture, Xeomin and Dysport. Despite the difference in names the way they work is principally the same. They come as a powder which is then mixed with a saline (water) solution for injecting.
What do we use Botox® for?
Botox® is used for areas where there is active muscle movement which is causing the overlying skin to crease. It works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, thereby stopping the muscles from contracting and allowing the wrinkles to relax. That’s it! Common areas to have Botox are around the eyes, frown lines and the forehead. Botox® generally lasts for around 3-4 months.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Not to be confused with this are dermal fillers. There are two types of filler – synthetic and natural. Synthetic fillers last a long time and can be classed as semi-permanent. The ®most commonly known fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance which is also found in our skin. It is the natural fillers that we use at Beauty Rediscovered.
What are Dermal Fillers used for?
Filler does what it says on the tin –it fills! Where there is no underlying muscle contraction causing wrinkles, they are generally caused by loss of volume in the fat beneath the skin. Filler is injected to plump up the area lacking volume with immediate results. Typical areas for fillers are; lips, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, ‘sad’ lines around the mouth, backs of hands. Fillers can last from 6 – 18 months depending on what type is used.
So there you have it – Botox® is used to soften wrinkles caused by muscle movement; fillers are used to plump up areas that have lost volume.
